How to Keep Your Extensions Looking Great Between Appointments

Hair extensions are a big investment, but you can’t rely solely on regular appointments with your stylist to keep them looking fresh. It’s important to care for them at home to not only help your hair extensions (and you!) look their best, but to prolong their life as well. Follow our expert recommendations to keep your investment in tip-top shape!
Change How You Wash and Condition Your Hair
Even though your extensions are made of real hair, how you wash and condition them isn’t the same. First, know that the less often you wash your hair, the longer your extensions will last. Aim for once or twice a week. If you feel like you can’t go that long between washes, try a dry shampoo in between.
Second, when washing your hair be careful not to pull or scrub through the length of the hair. Lather at the scalp and gently pull it through to the ends before rinsing. When conditioning, condition only from mid-shaft down to the ends. Conditioner can weaken the bonds.
Invest in a New Hair Brush
It’s important to brush your hair regularly (ideally, every morning and night) to avoid tangles, matts, and general deterioration of your hair. Unkempt extensions lose their wow-factor quickly!
A loop brush or one with soft bristles is best for your hair and will avoid pulling on the bonds. Always start at the bottom and slowly work your way up through your hair.
If your hair is wet, a wide-toothed comb will do the trick.
Be Careful When Styling
After air-drying or blow-drying your hair, you can use heat styling tools as usual. However, be sure to avoid putting heat directly on the bonds. If you’re heat styling regularly, be sure to invest in a protecting spray – this applies even if you’re not wearing extensions!
A smoothing oil on the ends will help polish off your finished look (try our Golden Rose Hair Oil!) – just be sure to avoid getting anything oil-based on the bonds. Hair spray, dry shampoos, and leave-in sprays are all A-OK to use on your hair extensions.
Invest in a Silk Pillowcase
There’s a few things you can do to keep your extensions healthy while you sleep, too. Invest in a silk pillowcase, brush your hair before bed, pull your locks into a low pony or braid, and always make sure your hair is dry before laying down.
Following these tips will help keep your hair extensions looking like new, and ensure that your investment is worth every penny. Of course, it’s crucial to stick to a regular appointment schedule to see your extensions pro, but maintaining your locks in between will keep them fresh and fabulous as long as possible.
